Let's talk flooring!

Hello all!

My name is Dylan and I have been installing mostly residential flooring since graduating highschool.

I have worked for various Insurance restoration companies as well as hometown flooring centers.

I have enjoyed great success for a lot of years until recently, I find myself sitting at home more and more, mainly due to, quite simply, a lack of work.

I still have calls coming in from word of mouth, yellow pages, and a few contractors, but the builders supply company, that has been a main staple in my business, has closed it's doors and filed bankruptcy. The new housing industry has all but vanished here in my part of NC.

My main question is...What do you guys think about lead generator companies?

I supposedly sign up with a small membership fee, the leads start coming to me via text, email ect..

I pay for each lead that I recieve w/ no guarantees of landing the job. I realize that it is up to me to ''close the deal'' once contact is made, and thats ok by me.

I'm just wondering what other installers thoughts on this were.

Anyone have experience with these type of companies?

Horror stories?

success stories?

Is it worth it?

Thanks in advance..Dylan.

Hey Dylan, I am a service magic contractor but I have my leads turned off. It worked out pretty well for awhile then they stopped checking the leads. Started getting to many tire kickers who were not really ready to install right away or it was 6 mo to a year out build or remodel.

I was batting a thousand competing with the other guys even though I was not lowest bidder. But it got to be just a hassle. Fees up to 38 bucks each if they pick you only and then thats not any guarantee you'll get the job.

I heard of other ones that charge a flat monthly fee. That might be better.

But since I built my intuit website for 7 bucks a month I get more calls from that than the yellow pages or any other medium.
Thanks for the valuable info Stephan. Ive talked with others also, and they are all saying basicaly the same thing. I'm still undecided, but cant help but to be intrigued in these super slow times.
The sales rep has offered to waive the 99$ sign up fee and now I am even more tempted to test the waters. We'll see! Thanks again.
Thats the way to work them Dylan. I got the fee waved as well. Hopefully there is not a sign out fee. lol

I forgot to turn off my leads this morning and got a call today already. If you have any questions about how to get false leads credited to your account let me know.

And don't be afraid to turn off the leads when you get really busy. Or you'll just be wasting money.
I'll keep ya posted. The rep is supposed to call Monday and You can bet your last dollar she will...like clockwork.
Oh yes, she will. The best thing about those leads are getting referrals from their friends or when they call you back to do more work. Gotta be on your toes and do top shelf work to keep getting 5 star ratings.

I did one vinyl 5' x5' repair for one guy ( dog ripped the hell outa the kitchen vinyl) and he only gave me a four star rating. I told him it wouldn't be perfect cus his piece of vinyl had been stored in the hot garage for a few years and had shrunk. The only line in the pattern that was off was under the toe kick which you could hardly even see. I had a feeling I shoulda said no but when you already got billed for the lead it's hard to say no. He was a renter and the landlord had a $700 deposit which he probably got back. grrrr

So the moral of this story is don't sign on for repairs!!!
I've been writing down all the ''details'' of which leads I will accept.
I'm thinking that I will only sign on for carpet restretches, as far as repairs go.
But then again...those can be impossible to get perfect most of the time.

Seems that alot of installers dont get the hallways stretched tight enough(going longways) and it's hard to stretch past all those doorways without having to patch something.....amybe I shouldnt even sign up for those, huh?
Dylan, I'd stick to the big stuff. Kinda hard to recoup your time and fee on a repair. Consumers think a carpet repair should only cost 50 dollars.

As you and I know it could take half a day to restretch a hallway if your cutting open seams. Then there's matching patterns through the doorways, loose rooms attached to hallways.....wait...what am I thinking...no one matches patterns through doorways. lol J/K
