"Dormant Cracks" in Concrete - Is There Such an Animal Out There?
Myself, I don't think so. I have heard this term before in articles and around the industry. In tile installations I feel all cracks need attention.
Since standards say we need to address movements joints when installing tile...another issue which is tough to deal with when installing tile or stone then how could there be such a thing as a dormant crack in concrete?

"Dormant" cracks are something of a misnomer..it'd be more accurate to refer to them as non-active.
Some non-active cracks can be created by a one time event such as undermining (subsidence crack, improper compaction of the subsoil) or cracking can be from plastic shrinkage, early carbonation and a variety of other causes that can be considered "non-active".
Active cracking can be thought of where concrete to either side of the crack or possibly joint move independent of each other, causing the crack to be dynamic.
