engineered flooring what stapler should I buy?

On a 1/2 x 5 engineered I use my Spotnails stapler. 18ga , 1/4 narrow crown, 1 3/8" nylon coated staples. You should space them very close, like 3" - 4" apart when installing a wide engineered.

thanks Jerry I'll check that stapler out. I do remember seeing that particular brand and liked the fact it could handle the longer staples. it seems, it would make sense to have the longest staple possible without going thru the bottom of the underlayment. For lack of a better word and blowing out the bottom of the underlayment with the a to long a staple? Am I right on this. thanks dan

Correction, the 18 guage Bostitch takes up to 1 1/2 inch staples. I just bought one. You did visit the site, yes?

Your flooring manufactures says for further info email them. I bet they would email back further instructions which you need to know. Then I would seriously consider hiring a professional.

what model bostitch are you refering to Stephen that has 18 gauge staple? M111fn? Do you think this is suitable? Won't this leave a dimple on the surface? I did call the flooring manufacturer and emailed them. they didn't return my phone calls, but emailed me and refered me to wood flooring association website that doesn't tell you much unless your a member. As far as installing it by a professional. I really enjoy doing things myself. I've done just about everthing when it comes to a home except wood flooring. tile, crown molding, trim, electrical wiring, drywall, by trade I do fabrication work for future vehicles. I don't feel I've ever been over my head. I think getting all the knowledge is the key. It does takes time to gather all the information down to the last detail. I've watched and read several books on installing flooring, but most of those are on 3/4" flooring. Thanks for your input guys Dan

Just to clarify the Bostitch LHF97125, the original "Floor Runner" is a 20ga, the SX 150 is just called a hardwood stapler and is 18 ga. Then the MIIIFS is the 15.5 ga.

The ajustable foot is definetly sweet. From 1/4 flooring to 9/16 or whatever in mere seconds. Comes with the NPT on it from the factory and is ready to roll.

Personally if I were using a 20ga I would fasten that close but then I don't trust a 20ga myself. With the 18ga you can get away with 8 in nailing schedule.

Dan, how is it you know about things like dimpling and not to nail thru the underlayment but not wether to use felt?

I picked this information up on my readings and asking alot of questions here and there. do you think I should use felt? two people I talked too, said no with engineered flooring on plywood. one guy said he uses rosin paper so another guy can easly slide the boards to the other guy stapling. since I'll be doing it myself. I'm more concerned whether a vapor barrier is necessary. it would sure make this a whole lot easier if the manufacture helped out. thanks guys

Can someone explain why Dan needs to use 15 lb felt. You know how I feel about helping DIY'rs when so many of us are suffering with no work. No offense Dan.

sorry melvin, no you haven't offended me, I understand totally. I can't afford to have someone to do it anyway, plus I enjoy doing it. Even if I could afford to have it done I wouldn't. Thanks Melvin sounds like I need felt too.
