Let's talk flooring!

Here are two different lock n fold type floors, cut out pictures showing the construction. One is high end manufacture, the other is generic type from big box store. Can you tell which is which?

Which one do you think is more stable...balanced construction

My guess would be the 5 layered sample.. Does it have a plastic locking clip on one end? Installing 800' right now of a Shaw 5" 14mm and it goes together like the Kahrs Woodloc.
Jerry, I believe it's 3G not 5G, no clips. Doubt you'll see a 5G at a big box. and no, the 3ply is the 1/2 inch Mirage although I think they are both pretty well balanced. My guess the 5 ply or "layered one has that exrtra layer cus it's so thick.

I am still curious as to the stability of the finished layer being bonded to a paper core. Time will tell I guess.
Hey Jerry, can you show me a picture of that Shaw core construction?
Yes, I'll try to remember.
Not sure how this Shaw product is going to fare.... but I don't make the stuff

Jerry, is there no middle ply? I can't make it out. The funny thing is that the Mirage is twice the cost of that HD floor.
My apolgies Stephen, I did not make it clear this is a laminate with a joinery called Lock N Place, similar to the Valinge I think. Carry on..... I'll be Ok . haha
Nice veneer on top Jerry, what is that 1/2 a mm LOL
Actually, there is 5G available at the Big Orange......Tarkett Genesis. 3/8", 5-ply, all wood, no HDF.
Well sure, it's too expensive right now tenn essee

I believe the armstrong lock n fold is all wood as well. But is that good or bad?
I was mainly just commenting on the 3G vs 5G....Bruce lock n fold is the 3G, Tarkett is 5G...In my area, they are both in the $3.50 or so range...not sure I would call either of them expensive.
As far as them being all wood, I think that's good because there is years of a proven track record for cross-ply cores, unlike mdf/hdf cores with wood veneers which are still fairly new and long-term performance can't truly be measured yet.

Exactly my concern. However Shaw has been doing it along time. Not sure what their track record is but I remember doing one least five years ago.
