Let's talk flooring!

Broke a cardinal rule lastnight and tinted US because I didn't think my stain color was quite "orangy" enough for the Gunstock I was matching and was looking for a "quick" solution because of my time frame. Well I went in this morning to a mess due to the lack of care on my part to feather my application. A few heavy areas that really can't be scraped because of the tinted finish and the US bled back thru the board edges. The Homeowners come back tomorrow and it's to late to resand at this point so I called them this morning and told them the bad news. I told them that we would get the home back to useable for their return and would reschedule when convenient for them for us to resand this debacle. The funny thing is is that they were less upset by the situation than I was. So I will have to put aside time to fix something that was easy enough to avoid if I had used my Grey matter tween the ears and not been in a hurry, I guess the old adage that "Haste makes waste" hold true........

Bummed, but smarter for the experience.......I hope.

Everybody gets a turn at something like that if we linger in this line of work long enough. Being pressed within a tight schedule is not good. If somebody wants me to guarantee the floors will be ready by a certain day, and I feel there is not enough room allowed for drying issues I tell them forget it.
I'm glad you have understanding customers though. They are probably relieved they have an honest floor guy who takes ownership of what he has done. In other words, they know they are getting more than the 'tail light' warranty! I'm not surprised you are more upset than they are. I can't stand having to do my work twice. And maybe this is a case where having a partner would help. A second set of eyes could have injected some sanity into this and said "no, we can't do that. It is too risky".
Craig,

I have a helper, but ultimately it was/ is my decision and this is all on me and me alone. We have done this successfully before so it maybe it was just this floor or I got lucky previously, I didn't take my time and do the job that I should've done and you're correct we all have one go bad or will if we do this long enough, this one really was avoidable. We will be eliminating US and it's tinting from future consideration and US only on recoats.......

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.......

And their check stays on the kitchen countertop, I do plan on retrieving it at a future date.....
Dale that honest attitude and quality work is what keeps you busy. I don't know anyone that can be disappointed with and honest and forthcoming contractor. Even if they get postponed. "Treat others like you would like to be treated" !!
Dan,

Quality wasn't there this time, plain stupid operator error.......
40 man hours + Materials.........

So Far
Thats could be even more of an expense if the floor was on it's last sanding. Just think you could be replacing the wood as well.
Well we're not in that situation, but you are indeed correct.............
Thats OK buddy even einstein had a bad day now and then. I still love ya!! Sleep well my friend!
Yeah dude.. that sucks... I know you've been at it way... I mean waaaay (old man ;)) longer than me.. but I get soo angry with myself when I make small mistakes or go outside my comfort zone, try something new and it fails... I had added some trans tint dye to some US for a small kitchen over the spring and it turned out perfect.. did the same thing on a set of stairs, looked good. I applied it with a padco and was anal about the feathing...
Sorry buddy.. And thanks for sharing...Geez.. even Dale screws up once in a while...
My last resand was about 4 years ago. I was experimenting with not screening. Well my hummell transition line were a bit mor apparent than I liked. Funny thing is the h/o didn't notice it till I pointed it out. I told him I wasn't happy and I wanted to resand it. I didn't want to put my companys name on that floor. The client very much appreciated it.
Fast -
Are you talking about the transition line in the middle of the floor on a stain job? That can be a real sneaky problem with not screening. Had the same thing happen myself.

BTW - sorry big D about the job gone bad. :-(
Nab.. yes... We were addressing them with the ros and it was seemless.. but sometimes you miss it...
Well we resanded this error in judgement today and will be applying stain in the morning when no one will be around. Two things I have to say,.....

1} don't tint US on a larger job, it's not worth going back to redo it and the ulcer you get thinking about it or kicking yourself isn't worth it.

2} It resands as I suspected and commented that it would sand this way a few years back discussing this with Jesse over at V.000001. 50g on the BM gummed up rather quickly as the US heated up and melted, but was able to get the 450 sqft area roughed off. 60g on the edger? LOL not a chance, maybe a few feet at best but 36g was required to clean up the stain/ US that had been applied to the floor......
