Let's talk flooring!

How does everyone handle coming up with a stain color for customers? Sanding areas on their floor and letting them pick over night then doing another round the next day isn't really doing it for me. But I also can't imagine having a huge set of panels for every color (depending on brand) for both red and white oak. And the problem with single boards is every board is a different color, so what do you do, try to pick a board that happens to be in the middle of the range? I  have a feeling I'm over thinking parts of this and also not even considering other things, so I'm just trying to gather input.

I have all the Dura seal colors on 5/16 x 5" x 11" planks, color & finish. We start there and let them see if something catches their eye so we can get a narrowed down color range. I agree that going back and forth to apply several colors on the floor is a waste of time and inefficient. I then have them keep the samples overnight or several days to view in different light and angles around the house. Most decide pretty easily and only a rare few have a must have color in mind that we must try to make "arguable"...............

That should have read "...then doing another round the next day during the job isn't really doing it for me." So we're not making extra trips there but it's still a pain. So what about the every board is a slightly different color thing I mentioned? Long ago we were trying to match an existing floor and doing samples on single boards was messing with us, one color would look good on one board but not match at all when done on a panel... so do you just pick boards that are in the middle of that color range? Sounds like a way better system than what we're doing either way.

Every board is going to be a "slightly" different color no matter what you do, it's like the Dana show, you need to educate the customer and set their expectations. The big thing is to make your samples through the same procedures that you would/ will on the actual floor. I also like the customer to sign off on the sample,
The reason I brought it up was in reference to single board samples vs multiple board panels with all those slightly different colors together. But sounds like I'm making mountains out of molehills.

E,

Like I said most can easily pick out a color from a relatively decent sized sample, there are exceptions that need the color applied directly to the floor and if I am there then I really don't mind as it doesn't take that much time BUT you need to get the color range narrowed down. I'm not going to apply 20 stain colors to a floor for you to choose from, you choose a couple from the samples and then I'll do a floor sample if need be if you want more than that then you'll pay for the service.....
