No regular backer board and thin set, grout in the middle, sanded caulk around the perimeter 3 ful cases of caulk and alot of patience...

Did you use polyurethane to set the tile as well as the wood?

we did the grid work first and then the tile. I made up a jig to simulate the tile, dry layed everything and glued and nailed as we went....
