CASE STUDY: ARDEX addresses budget and quality concerns on Trump Tower project in Ft. Lauderdale

CHALLENGE:

- Severe leveling issues needed to be corrected prior to installing tile and stone
- Budget concerns
- Large renovation area – 190,000 square feet over 298 condo units

PROBLEM:

Prior to installing tile and stone on the 190,000 square-foot Trump International Hotel & Tower project, leveling of the uneven substrate was required at an average depth of ¾”. A lower cost gypsum underlayment was considered, but due to concerns over the possibility of mold growth with gypsum, a Portland-cement based product was preferred.

In addition, a waterproofing membrane was required over the 5,000 square foot pool deck.

SOLUTION:

To address the budget concerns on this project without the risks associated with gypsum, ARDEX recommended ARDEX V 1200™ SELF-LEVELING FLOORING UNDERLAYMENT. ARDEX V 1200 is an economical Portland-cement leveling product that contains no gypsum and can be installed up to 1¼” thick. With the use of the ARDEX Levelcraft™ Automatic Mixing Pump, the installation proceeded quickly and easily throughout the 298 already painted condo units.

Additionally, ARDEX 8+9™ WATERPROOFING COMPOUND, a two-coat, roller applied Portland-cement based waterproofing membrane, was applied to the pool deck, and ARDEX X 5™ THIN SET MORTAR and ARDEX X 9 PREMIUM SHEARFLEX THIN SET MORTAR were used throughout the building to install the tile and stone flooring.

ARDEX was nominated for the Craftsmanship Award for this project. For more information and photographs, please visit www.ardex.com.

Hi, Stephen,

Yes, we do. Our X 32 is a thin-to-thick bed mortar. Check it out here:

That sounds like an interesting job T. Wondering if you guys have a medium bed mortor for large format stone and tiles. Thinset just does not cut it under heavy tile and stone.
