CASE STUDY: ARDEX called upon for demanding sheet vinyl specification

CHALLENGE:

· Large renovation: 10,000 square feet on multiple grade levels

· Severe leveling issues

· Building unenclosed during installation

PROBLEM:

The new Mount Nittany Medical Center construction project in State College, PA included specifications for sheet vinyl to be installed in all bathroom areas. The bathroom floors were widely recessed to allow for perfect pitching to the drains for the flooring installation. When installing ceramic tile, it is easier to get proper pitch using a basic “mud mix” and setting mortars, but sheet vinyl requires a much smoother and harder surface.

In addition, the exterior walls of the complex were not yet installed, so the sloping material had to be water and weather resistant. The project covered 10,000 sq. ft. on three floors.

SOLUTION:

ARDEX EB 2™ FAST SETTING SCREED CEMENT was chosen for its ability to be exposed to exterior elements and for its ability to be sloped, as well as for its high strength properties. ARDEX EB 2 can be installed as a bonded application at a minimum thickness of ¾”, has no maximum thickness and, when mixed to the Commercial Service Grade in accordance with our written recommendations, achieves a final compressive strength rating of 6,500 psi!
