Let's talk flooring!
“One cannot escape dogmas—those who hold most firmly to dogmas today are those whose only dogma is that dogmas should be feared like the plague.”
― Sigrid Undset
This quote from one of Norway’s most famous authors, Sigrid Undset, is very much at the heart of the Stang-Lund collection. In every way the flooring industry is beset by certain “Dogmas”- beliefs that are stridently felt by one professional or another. Often times these beliefs run in deep crosscurrent to one another. It is the effort of Stang-lund to turn a few of these dogmas on their heads.
The first is in regards to finish. It has been felt, ever since the inception of vinyl flooring, that the way ahead for hardwood floors was to create harder and harder finishes. However; the path to the harder finish is a zero-sum-game. Ultimately the finish will never be hard enough (just like plastic or vinyl is never hard enough). The finish will degrade and when it does the harder the finish then more obvious the abrasions for the light refracts off the broken surface. Finally, the finish must be repaired and to do so it a trying and laborious affair. With Rubio Monocoat this fool’s errand is averted for the finish is distinctively matte, will not fracture and is readily reparable.
Another dogma is that the perfect floor looks like a piano top. It is devoid of natural beauty, blemishes and characteristics and shines like a piece of crystal. Indeed, this is to miss the very essence of the floor. For this, we flip the mis-conception and take what is ordinary and attempt to heighten accentuate and compliment the natural beauty and take something that which is inherently beautiful, put a kind hand to it elevate the look and appearance to meet the design and livability one earns by living with the floor instead of apart or on top of it. It is this principle “living with not apart” which is the keystone of our decision to use Rubio Monocoat to achieve the distinctive looks we have in the Stang-Lund collection of design looks for hardwood flooring.
With this we would like to leave you with one last pearl of wisdom from Sigrid Undset:
“All my days I have longed equally to travel the right road and to take my own errant path.”
Isn't that the way that we all choose, or hope to choose, to live our lives. That we are apart of a greater good- the commune of life- yet individual enough to make our own determinations separate and distinct from the dogmas of others which seek to control out of false belief?
